Important information, particularly on organic material from graves,
can be preserved due to metal compound diffusion. This allows recovery
and analyses of materials such as wood, textiles, and leather.
By identifying the type of wood used, we are able to get information about
man's preferences for certain woods (anthropogenic selection). The selection
of a particular wood or species depends first of all on its technological
properties which will guarantee the quality of the woodwork and make its
manufacturing easier. Certainly, we can conclude that prehistoric peoples
realized different woods and species had different qualities, and used
them accordingly. However, we do not know how far the selection relied
on tradition and so influenced the choice of different woods with similar
technological properties.
Systematic research on wood could therefore provide valuable information
about specialization and the beginning of specific trades and professional
groups. |
